The General Meeting of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences of ANAS was held in a hybrid format.
The Division's employees working in the regions joined the meeting via Zoom. The meeting was devoted to the discussion and assessment of important research results obtained in scientific and educational institutions of the country in the field of biology, agriculture and medicine. In addition to the members of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences, the meeting was attended by official representatives of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, heads and leading scientists of research institutions and universities, authors of important results and others.
First, the Vice-President of ANAS, Academician Irada Huseynova, Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences of ANAS, familiarized the participants with the agenda of the meeting. The Head of the Division noted that the current year was marked by a number of important events. The presidential and parliamentary elections in the Republic of Azerbaijan, which fully restored its sovereignty in 2024, were held with great enthusiasm and organization, and both electoral processes covered the territories liberated from occupation after many years. The announcement by the President of the country of 2024 as the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World" had a significant impact on the activities of scientific institutions and specialized departments of universities working in the scientific areas of the Division, as well as the scientific community, and led to the emergence of new priorities for solving important problems. Within the framework of these issues, numerous events were implemented by the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, ministries, scientific and educational institutions.
The academician drew attention to the fact that the Republic of Azerbaijan successfully hosted the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) - a grand event of great historical significance associated with national, regional and global goals, at which fateful decisions for the world were made. The leadership and members of the DBMS, specialized research institutes of the republic actively participated in the work of COP29, made numerous speeches and published articles in the republican press. The second issue of the journal "Life Sciences and Biomedicine" of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences for 2024, 4 monographs of the members of the Division are dedicated to the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World" and the issues raised at COP29. Particularly noteworthy is the fundamental monograph of Corresponding Member of ANAS Elshad Gurbanov "Vegetation of Azerbaijan", which is the result of many years of research in Azerbaijan. The Vice President of ANAS put on the agenda the fact that COP29 set a number of new goals for biological, agricultural and medical sciences and spoke about these goals.
According to the Charter of ANAS signed by the President of the country, Academician Irada Huseynova said that the main purpose of today's event is to discuss important results of scientific research obtained in the republic at the Academy.
Then the hearing of relevant reports began. First, the most important fundamental and clinical results obtained in 2024 in research and educational institutions of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan were presented by the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Ministry, Director of the Public Legal Entity "Republican Anti-Tuberculosis Sanatorium for Children and Adolescents named after Professor Gindes", Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Rashid Badalov and a member of the Scientific Council, Associate Professor of the Azerbaijan Medical University, Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine Tore Sadigova. Numerous questions from the meeting participants were answered and discussions took place. Concluding the discussions, Academician Irada Huseynova drew attention to the fact that the quality and status of the publication of important research results coming from the Ministry of Health are improving from year to year.
Later, the relevant reports of the research institutions of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan were heard. The most important results achieved in 2024 and the corresponding statistical indicators were presented by the Director General of the Institute of Botany of the MSE of the RA, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Sayyara Ibadullaeva and the Executive Director of the Institute, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Shakir Gasimov, Director General of the Institute of Zoology of the MSE of the RA, Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor Aladdin Eyvazov, Executive Director of the Institute of Physiology of the MSE of the RA, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Akhmed Hajiyev, Director General of the Institute of Genetic Resources of the MSE of the RA, Corresponding Member of ANAS Zeynal Akparov, Director General of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the MSE of the RA, Corresponding Member of ANAS Alovsat Guliyev, Acting Director General of the Institute of Dendrology of the MSE of the RA, Doctor of Philosophy in Biology Minara Gasanova, Director General of the Institute of Microbiology of the MSE of the RA, Corresponding Member of ANAS Panah Muradov, Director General of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies of the MSE of the RA, Academician Irada Huseynova. The speakers and authors of important results answered the questions that arose during the reports. During extensive discussions with the participation of academicians Irada Huseynova and Garib Mamedov, corresponding members of ANAS Elshad Gurbanov, Zeynal Akparov, Amin Ismailov, Tarlan Mamedov, Vagif Novruzov and Alovsat Guliyev, doctors of biological sciences, professors Aydin Askerov and Elman Iskandar, doctor of philosophy in biology Elman Yusifov and other leading scientists, the importance of coordinated actions, organizing joint research on current issues, new priority areas, plans and prospects that meet the challenges of the time and the needs of the country was emphasized.
Academician Irada Huseynova recalled the work carried out on the 3rd edition of the Red Book of the Republic of Azerbaijan, emphasized the importance of cooperation and coordination for the sake of common goals, and noted the importance of strengthening research activities in the liberated territories. Corresponding Member of ANAS Vagif Novruzov drew attention to the need to prepare the Red Book of Karabakh and the activities carried out in this direction. Professor Sayare Ibadullayeva said that the book "Flora of Karabakh" is being finalized by scientists of the Institute of Botany. Academician Garib Mamedov and Corresponding Member of ANAS Amin Ismailov stated that there is a need to conduct research on the use of modern technologies to solve the problems of land degradation and desertification. Corresponding Member of ANAS Zeynal Akparov spoke about the problems of creating new varieties, the unity of fundamental and applied science in this area. Corresponding Member of ANAS Alovsat Guliyev expressed his opinion on ways to solve water problems in the country and restore the kakhriz system in the territories liberated from occupation.
At the General Meeting of the DBMS, the official representative of the ministry, director of the Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture, Doctor of Philosophy of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor Faig Khudayev presented the important achievements of scientific and educational institutions of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Academician Irada Huseynova, corresponding members of ANAS Zeynal Akbarov, Amin Ismayilov, Panah Muradov and others addressed questions to the speaker, emphasized the importance of strengthening research activities carried out in specialized institutes, and drew attention to the high role of the unity of fundamental science and innovation in ensuring food security of the country.
The meeting heard issues related to the 110th anniversary of the birth of outstanding scientists - the 110th anniversary of the birth of Honorary Member of ANAS Ihsan Dogramadzhi, the 100th anniversary of Academician Siddiga Mamedova, the 130th anniversary of Academician Mustafa Tochubashov and made relevant decisions.
Academician Irada Huseynova, who concluded the general meeting of the DBMS, made general conclusions, thanked all the speakers and participants, and said that all proposals and recommendations put forward by ANAS members, heads of institutes, leading scientists will be studied and the Division will take appropriate steps for a more specific discussion on them.
