The Division of Biological and Medical Sciences of ANAS presented a report on its activities for 2024

At the next meeting of the Presidium of ANAS, the report on the scientific and scientific-organizational activities of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences of ANAS for 2024 was presented.  

The Vice President of ANAS, Chair of the Scientific Council of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences, Academician Irada Huseynova, presented the report on the scientific and organizational activities of the division for 2024. She said that, during the reporting year, research and important works were carried out based on the decrees and orders of the head of state, the decisions and orders of the Cabinet of Ministers, within the framework of the “Green World Solidarity Year” and the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), various state programs, as well as tasks in the decisions of the General Assembly and the Presidium of ANAS.  

Academician Irada Huseynova stressed that the research conducted in relevant scientific and educational institutions covered important tasks such as the study, restoration, protection, and efficient use of biodiversity, land, and water resources; development of electronic databases and maps; investigation of the molecular-genetic and physicochemical foundations of biological processes; genomic, proteomic, and metabolomic studies; development of fundamental and applied principles for new bio-, nano-, and post-genomic technologies; computational biology; application of machine learning and artificial intelligence methods in biology and medicine; study of the physiological and molecular-genetic bases of pathologies, etc.

Stating that numerous meetings, conferences, exhibitions, and seminars were organized within the framework of the “Green World Solidarity Year” and COP29, Academician Irada Huseynova underlined that the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences organized and participated in several conferences and seminars such as “Green Energy and Green Economy Issues”,  “Our Green World in the Light of Science”, “The Role of National Leader Heydar Aliyev in Improving the Environment in Azerbaijan”, “Global Climate Change, Photosynthesis, and Sustainable Living”,  “Impact of Anthropogenic Factors and Climate Change on the Ecosystems of Karabakh” and many others. Numerous books, monographs, and articles were also published.

The Academician emphasized that, during the reporting period, one of the key directions of the scientific activity of the division and its research institutions was the “Great Return of Science” to Karabakh. Numerous expeditions were carried out by the institutes of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences in the territories liberated from occupation, including the monitoring of rare and endangered plant and animal species, land and water resources, drinking water sources, forests, and other ecosystems.  

Academician Irada Huseynova stated that during the reporting year, research was conducted in the institutes under the Division covering 20 issues, 76 topics, 218 works, and 480 stages, of which 16 topics, 77 works, and 447 stages completed. In medical institutions, research was carried out on 32 issues, 145 topics (20 completed), and 118 works (57 completed) and 211 stages (92 completed).

Speaking about publishing activities, Academician Irada Guseynova noted that during the reporting period, the staff of the institutes under the Division published 1201 scientific works, including 9 books, 16 monographs, 482 articles (291 abroad, 254 of which were in impact factor journals, and 106 in journals indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases), and 658 theses (258 abroad). The works of the staff were cited 4097 times.

The staff of scientific institutions and medical educational establishments published 3660 scientific works, including 81 books (5 abroad), 20 monographs (1 abroad), 1631 articles (703 abroad, 317 of which were in journals included in the Web of Science and Scopus databases), and 1928 theses (675 abroad). The scientific works were cited 667 times.

During the reporting year, the staff of research institutions and educational establishments under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan published 1242 scientific works, including 17 books (3 abroad), 4 monographs, 697 articles (182 abroad, 117 of which were in journals indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases), and 524 theses (212 abroad). The works of the staff were cited 513 times.

The report also covered the integration of science and education, international relations, staff training, the functioning of international laboratories within institutions, the state of electronic science, conferences, seminars, anniversaries, awards, patents, grants, and more.

Academician Irada Guseynova emphasized that the fields of research conducted by the laureates of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, as well as in Chemistry, present new challenges for biological and medical sciences.

After the report was presented, the Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Vugar Karimov, the Head of the Department of the State Agency for Science and Higher Education Mubariz Hajıbeyov, the Advisor of ANAS, Academician Garib Mammadov, Corresponding Members of ANAS Elshad Gurbanov and Vagif Novruzov, the Director of the Agricultural Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture, Faig Khudayev, the Head of the Nuclear Medicine Department at the National Oncology Center of the Ministry of Health, Fuad Novruzov, and the Head of the World Wildlife Fund representative office in Azerbaijan, Elshad Asgarov delivered speeches and shared their thoughts and suggestions.

The President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli highly appreciated the report and underlined that the employees of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences have been actively involved in the “Green World Solidarity Year” and COP29, organizing numerous conferences and publishing works. Academician Isa Habibbeyli also stated that the research conducted by the division’s staff in Karabakh is commendable.  

At the end, relevant tasks were assigned to the division by the decision of the Presidium.
