A joint meeting of the Scientific Council of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences of ANAS and the Scientific Council of the Institute of Zoology was held. The meeting was dedicated to the results of scientific and scientific-organizational activities of the Institute of Zoology in 2021.
Opening the meeting, Vice-President of ANAS, Chairman of the Academic Council of Division of Biological and Medical Sciences, academician Irada Huseynova greeted the participants and gave the floor to the acting director of the Institute, Ph.D. in agrarian sciences Aladdin Eyvazov. The rapporteur said that 34 scientific researches on 4 problems, 10 topics on the direction of “Investigation, restoration, protection, efficient use of biodiversity, soil and water resources with modern approaches, creation of electronic databases and maps” were carried out this year, and one of the scientific research and 109 stages were completed. Aladdin Eyvazov noted that in the reporting year, comparative analysis of the species diversity of ciliates in different areas of the Caspian Sea and a preliminary assessment of the quality of the environment for the structure of free-living ciliate communities was conducted at the Institute, and 29 species of ciliates belonging to 15 families, including various ecological groups, were recorded in the coastal waters of the Absheron.
The rapporteur emphasized that Stylurus ubadschii (Gompidae, Odonata) have been recorded for the first time for the Azerbaijan fauna. It was reported that 4 new species of opiliones and 1 new species of spider (Dysderidae family) have been described for science. It was first identified that Levant vipers hunted from the nature at the end of the breeding season (autumn) lay eggs with mature embryos during the winter months (December-February), in artificial conditions, outside the season without mating. These facts prove that the sperm material left in the female's fallopian tube after autumn mating has been stored for a long time, or that the fertilized eggs have entered the embryonic diapause stage due to unfavorable weather condition in autumn.
Aladdin Eyvazov also stated that this year the specialists of the working group setting up to prepare the third edition of the "Red Book" of the Republic of Azerbaijan conducted extensive researches in various areas of Azerbaijan and 279 rare and endangered animal species are planned to be included in this edition of the Red Book.
A total of 128 scientific works were published, including 55 articles, 56 conference materials, 4 monographs (1 in abroad), 13 booklets and flyers. Of these, 41 articles and 27 conference materials were published in foreign journals. It was reported that 23 of these articles were published in journals indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Aladdin Eyvazov also provided detailed information on grant projects, signed agreements, future plans and prospects for this year. He noted that the proceedings of the scientific-practical conference dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Institute of Zoology of ANAS and the 100th anniversary of academician Musa Musayev, "Fundamental and applied scientific research in zoology: current issues, achievements and innovations" have been published.
Finally, the report was widely discussed, questions were answered and suggestions were made. Summing up the discussions, academician Irada Huseynova gave instructions and recommendations to the administration and staff of the institute. And finally, the organization’ performance was positively assessed and a decision was made to adopt an annual report.
