The territory of Karabakh in the Lesser Caucasus of Azerbaijan consists of 1/6 of the total area of the republic (plains, mountains and highlands).
Occupation of 20% of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia since 1988 led to the deportation of one million people from these territories, including the destruction of historical and cultural monuments and the destruction of many species of flora and fauna. However, before the occupation of 36% of the total territory of Karabakh, or 160,000 hectares, there were only forests.
